Kanye West is always in the news, and 78% of the time, it’s about something unrelated to music. This is going to be a short rant, but a serious one. Kanye West is the biggest jerk in music today. Period. He is everything wrong with the industry. He proved that following Beck’s (well deserved) win of “best album” for Morning Phase.
I enjoyed Kanye West’s music, I genuinely did. Graduation was practically the soundtrack to my freshman and sophomore years of college. But nostalgia can’t make up for his behavior and because of his conduct over the years, his music leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. He has proven that he is spoiled, entitled, ignorant and rude time and time again, but this should be the last straw. Here is what Kanye West said regarding Beck winning over Beyonce (what is it with him “standing up” for her?).
“I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us,” West said (via Vanity Fair). “We ain’t going to play with them no more. ‘Flawless.’ Beyoncé’s video. And Beck needs to respect artistry, and he should have given his award to Beyoncé.”
WHAT?! I don’t think Kanye West actually knows who Beck is. Beck is an iconic solo artist who has been huge in grunge, alternative and indie rock for over 20 years. This was his 12th studio album, and it was a fantastic piece of music. But “Yeezus” has spoken, and Beck is now no longer an artist… How much more ignorant can he get? Kanye didn’t even have an album up for consideration, yet he felt a need to insert himself into a situation that had nothing to do with him. Why? Because he is an egomaniac who needs to be in the spotlight at all times, or he does stupid things, like interrupting Taylor Swift at the VMA’s in 2009. Oh wait, he started to do that at last night’s Grammys too. Here is a video of Kanye’s stunt and quote (with a hilarious reaction from Jay-Z).
Initially, most people thought it was a joke, but West confirmed shortly after that he was serious but thought better of it before he completed his jackassery. So for once, Kanye West thought about someone other than himself? Not for long, as the quotes about Beck came shortly after. He then digs an even deeper hole with this gem of a comment.
“I’m 36 years old and I have 21 Grammys, that’s the most Grammys of any 36-year-old. Out of all of those 21 Grammys, I’ve never won a Grammy against a white artist. … So when the Grammys nominations come out, and ‘Yeezus’ is the top one or two album on every single list, but only gets two nominations from the Grammys, what are they trying to say? Do they think that I wouldn’t notice? Do they think that, someway, that I don’t have the power to completely diminish all of their credibility at this moment?”
Well I have looked through Kanye’s wikipedia page, and gone through each award he was nominated for and who he won or lost against. The facts don’t back up what he said. Here are the results from his appearances in the “Best Album” category. In 2005, he lost best album to Ray Charles. In 2006, he lost best album to U2. His album was Late Registration. Sorry, I understand why U2 won. In 2007, he lost to Herbie Hancock. In 2012, he beat HIMSELF in the “Best Rap Album” category, when My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy topped Watch the Throne! In 2014, he lost “Best Rap Album” to Macklemore, which I disagreed with. Every other lesser category he’s been nominated for, he’s either won, or lost to a black artist. I checked, you can feel free to look through the grammy results from 2005 to 2014 if you don’t believe me. The point is that what Kanye said isn’t supported by his actual record.
I’m not about to get into the deeper issues of institutional racism or whether or not it exists in the music industry, but this is classless. Not because he’s wrong, but because again, this award had nothing to do with him. He is mad because he and his friends don’t win every award. Thats it. He doesn’t think that anyone other than him and his chosen few deserve recognition. The second someone he doesn’t approve of gets recognition, Kanye West goes off on one of his legendary tirades and for some reason, we listen. We need to stop. He needs to stop.
Kanye, let me explain something about Beck, before I go delete all of your music from my computer. Beck plays at least a dozen instruments, writes all of his own songs, and is the sole producer of his music almost all of the time. That is true artistry. Beck has mastered his craft so thoroughly that he doesn’t need eight writers, a dozen extra producers and auto tune to create an album that is regarded as the best of the year by the industry. Maybe if you’d spent more time on your music instead of publicity stunts and tabloid garbage this year, you’d have won the “best album” Maybe if Beyonce’s album had been better than Beck’s, she’d have won. Unlike you, “Ye”, Beyonce is gracious in defeat, it’s a shame that she has been drawn into your nonsense.
Even if Kanye was trying to make a higher point about the Grammys and their selection process, he lost any credibility when he made personal attacks towards Beck.
